Body-Safe Materials 101
Understanding materials: silicone, latex-free, and what to look for.
Why materials matter
Some materials can irritate skin, cause allergic reactions, or break down over time. Body-safe materials are non-porous, easy to clean, and designed for direct skin contact.
Body-safe materials
Platinum-cure silicone: Top choice for many products. Non-porous, hypoallergenic, and long-lasting. Can be sterilized. Look for “platinum silicone” or “medical-grade silicone.”
ABS plastic: Hard plastic used in some toys. Non-porous and body-safe when smooth and sealed.
Stainless steel: Non-porous, easy to clean, and body-safe. Often used in premium products.
Glass (borosilicate): Non-porous and body-safe. Ensure it’s made for body use, not decorative glass.
Materials to avoid
PVC / vinyl / jelly: Often contain phthalates and can be porous. Can cause irritation or allergic reactions.
TPE/TPR: Softer materials that can be porous and harder to clean. Not ideal for internal use.
Unlabeled or “novelty” only: If a product doesn’t list materials or says “for novelty use only,” it may not be body-safe.
Lubricant compatibility
Silicone products: Use water-based or hybrid lubricants. Avoid silicone-based lube—it can damage silicone products.
Other body-safe materials: Water-based and silicone-based lubes are generally fine. Check the product’s care instructions.
Cleaning and storage
Wash body-safe products with mild soap and water before and after use. Non-porous materials can also be sterilized according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Store in a clean, dry place.
When in doubt, check the product listing for material details and care instructions.
